Thread Rolling
Thread rolling is a process used for making external threads. With thread rolling hardened dies are used which press onto a material causing it to deform to the dies mirror image. This creates a much stronger thread then a machined thread due to the greater density of the material it creates around the thread. If the threading process is not properly set up, the created thread can generate a lead error which can be difficult to detect without proper inspection processes. Lead error in a tight mating fit will prevent total engagement of the screw in the mating part and often can cause it to lock up destroying both parts.
Heartland has both dual and three die rolling capabilities with rolling pressures up to 80,000 pounds which can create up to 2.50" diameter threads. Heartland has extensive rolling experience and inspection tools to detect lead error problems.
